When and where will the match take place?

Celtic’s contest in Germany is scheduled for Tuesday 1st November 2016 and will take place at Borussia Park, Monchengladbach. The capacity of the stadium is a little over 54,000 for domestic games, but this falls to 46,249 for European ties as safe standing is not permitted within UEFA arenas. Using the 5% rule generally used for away supporters, the German club will have to provide Celtic with somewhere in the region of 2,300 tickets for the match. An interactive map providing you with the location of the stadium can be found below. The stadium is situated approximately four kilometres to the south-west of Monchengladbach’s city centre, slightly outwith the boundaries of the city.

How Can I Make My Way To Monchengladbach and the Stadium?

The city of Monchengladbach lies within the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany, halfway between the city of Dusseldorf and the border with the Netherlands. There are six international airports within a 75 mile radius of Monchengladbach, with the closest being Dusseldorf International Airport, some 20 miles to the east. The others and their respective distances are Weeze, Germany (44 miles); Maastricht, Netherlands (47 miles); Cologne, Germany (52 miles); Eindhoven, Netherlands (64 miles); and Dortmund, Germany (75 miles).

Trains run from the cities of Dusseldorf, Dortmund and Cologne into Monchengladbach on an hourly basis. The largest railway station in the city is that of Monchengladbach Hauptbahnhof (also known as Monchengladbach Hbf). This station lies in the centre of the city, approximately five kilometres north-east of Borussia Park stadium.

Due to the relatively isolated nature of the stadium, Borussia Monchengladbach run shuttle buses for supporters on matchdays from both of the city’s main railway stations, each of which take around twenty minutes (depending on traffic) to reach their destination. For the sake of clarity, the other railway station is known as Rheydt Hauptbahnhof. The walk from the city centre to the stadium can easily take over an hour, so unless you are particularly fit and have a lot of time to spare, it may not be terribly advisable. Taxis are another option open to supporters.

Where Will the Celtic Support Be Within the Stadium?

Away fans are generally housed in areas 6 and 7 of Borussia Park, in the south-east corner between the Sudtribune and Osttribune. These areas are marked in pink below. On occasion, when larger travelling supports are expected (and there is sufficient room for a larger allocation) then the upper tiers above these areas (6a and 7a) can also be used for visiting fans.

What Will the Weather Be Like?

In this area of Germany, the daily average temperatures tend to range from as high as 12 Celsius down to 4 Celsius depending on the time of day, severity of weather etc. On paper, this is not entirely dissimilar to the same period in Glasgow. October and November do not tend to be particularly wet months, with approximately half the rainfall generally experienced as there would be in Glasgow at the same time of year.

  1. Hi Bhoys. I’m thinking of heading over for this game, been to Barcelona already so will try this trip for a change. Anyone any ideas where i’d locate a few tickets? All help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    • Sorry sir, only just saw this. I would presume our away allocation will sell out long before it reaches the stage where it would go on sale to all season ticket holders, with corporate tickets, official charters and those allocated to fans with the best recent away records probably filling it. Therefore, your best bet may be to try to lay your hands on some tickets when you’re over there – or before you go. I know Barca sold home tickets to foreigners online in the past, but Monchengladbach may well sell out their stadium before it went to a general sale. I read somewhere their average league attendance last season was near capacity. If I hear of anything in the meantime I’ll be sure to let you know.
