Celtic Draw FC Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow
In the last few moments, Celtic have been drawn against FC Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow in the group stages of this season’s Champions League. The Scottish Champions will face a stern test in the coming months, as they take on the runners up in last years Spanish, Portugese and Russian leagues. Oddly, Celtic are the only current champions in this group.
Whilst this group will undoubtedly be a challenge, it could have been worse. Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Ajax were the first three names out of the hat in Group D, but thankfully (at least from the point of view of potential qualification) Borussia Dortmund joined them, and not Celtic. Any points taken from the Catalan giants will be a major achievement, but I think we will all hope we can take points off of the other two sides given the chance.
The first two teams will qualify for the knock out stages, whilst the team who finish third will drop into the Europa League. The first tie will take place on the 18th/19th September.
Lionel Messi and co are on their way back to Celtic Park, and I’m sure we’re all hoping it’s going to be a season to remember!
